Vehicle registration in Boksburg

In South Africa, every vehicle must be registered with the relevant district licensing department. Vehicle registration is not the same as vehicle licensing — without a registered vehicle, you can't get a licence disc, and driving an unregistered vehicle on public roads can result in a fine. There are two types of registration, depending on whether the vehicle is new or already owned.

How this service works

A two-step service

Vehicle registration has to be done together with a vehicle licence disc renewal. Each step has its own documents and fees.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between vehicle registration and vehicle licensing?

Registration puts the vehicle on the national system in the owner's name; licensing is the annual renewal that gives you a licence disc. A vehicle has to be registered before it can be licensed, and driving an unregistered vehicle on public roads can lead to a fine.

Do I also need to renew the licence disc?

Yes. Vehicle registration is a two-step service: step 1 is the registration itself, and step 2 is a vehicle licence disc renewal, which has to be done together with it. The licence disc renewal is charged separately and has its own documents and fees, so see our licence disc renewal page for those.

How much does it cost to register a vehicle?

The licensing department charges a R228 registration fee, and RenewGP's service fee is R180. The vehicle's licence fee is not part of registration: it is paid in step 2, the licence disc renewal, which is charged separately.

What do I need to register a new vehicle?

Your ID copy, the RC1 (logbook), proof of address, and a roadworthy certificate if the vehicle is a heavy load or Road Transport Quality System (RTQS) vehicle. The full checklists for new and pre-owned vehicles are above.

How long does registration take?

Usually 1–4 days.
