Change of ownership in Boksburg

There are several categories of change of ownership, depending on who's selling and who's buying. If you've purchased a pre-owned vehicle, an NCO must be completed alongside your vehicle's registration. Change of ownership means the current titleholder is updated on the vehicle's registration certificate, and the new titleholder is registered on the National Traffic Information System (eNaTIS). Select the category that matches your situation.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to change ownership after buying a vehicle?

The seller must give the NCO notification to their registering authority within 21 days of the sale, and the buyer must apply for registration (the RLV form) within 21 days of buying or acquiring the vehicle, with the current registration certificate.

Do I also need to renew the licence disc?

Yes. Change of ownership is a two-step service: step 1 is the change of ownership, and step 2 is a vehicle licence disc renewal, which has to be done together with it. The licence disc renewal is charged separately and has its own documents and fees, so see our licence disc renewal page for those.

What does a change of ownership actually do?

It updates the current titleholder on the vehicle's registration certificate and registers the new titleholder on the national traffic information system (eNaTIS).

Which type of change of ownership do I need?

It depends on who is selling and who is buying: bank to private, bank to private company, company to company, company to private, private to company, private to private, or from a deceased estate. Open the matching option above to see exactly what to bring.

How much does it cost?

The licensing department charges a R228 registration fee. RenewGP's service fee is R180, and the process usually takes 1–4 days.
